Gateway College Past And Present Cricket Teams Go Head To Head
On a glorious sunny afternoon at Syston Cricket Club, the Gateway College Students XI defeated the Graham Blatherwick Alumni XI with ease.
The students scored 221 for 8 from 25 overs and the Blatherwick XI fell 98 runs short for the loss of 9 wickets. There was some excellent early hitting from the students - particularly Irbaaz Rangara, who was retired on 75, and Cricketer of the Year Harsimran Singh - from some poor bowling.
The target looked beyond reach from the outset for the former students and staff, and when Vikram Goraniya was out from a careless shot to cover; all hope of a victory was lost. Some lusty hitting by Karl Brown and Pete Jones made the total defeat respectable on what was a very enjoyable afternoon.
At the end of the match, presentations were made by Derek Hubbard, a Gateway student from 1938 to 1944 to the umpires, John Punchard (Coach), Harsimran Singh (Cricketer of the Year) and Irbaaz Rangara (Man of the Match) before the Cup was presented to the winning captain Harsimran Singh.
The Blatherwick Cup will join the other trophies awarded to the current college team who have had a heady season winning the Midlands U21 T20 competition and coming second in the Leicester and Rutland U19 County Cup competition earlier this year.
This was the fifth annual Blatherwick Cup cricket match to take place between the current College team and former students and staff.
Former Gateway teacher, event founder and namesake Graham Blatherwick explains, “We began the tournament for fun; to keep in touch with old friends and colleagues and to make a bridge between our previous players and the current college team.Although the youngsters are riding high after a successful season, this may have been their biggest challenge yet!”
